Amy Marsden: Vipoglanstat – A New Treatment for Endometriosis

Amy Marsden, Exam Support Worker at The University of Sheffield, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Gesynta is developing a new treatment for endometriosis called Vipoglanstat, currently in Phase II of clinical trials. I am really happy to be finding out about this and I wanted to share how it links to my final year research project.

Endometriosis, a gynaecological condition which impacts 1 in 10 menstruators, is currently treated through hormonal-based treatments, painkillers and surgery. These options alleviate symptoms and don’t provide enough relief to most patients.

Last year, I focused my research on a policy proposal (abstract attached) aimed at accelerating the diagnosis of endometriosis through non-invasive tools. By prioritising funding, this approach could help patients access support sooner. However, I was mindful that even with an earlier diagnosis, there lacks an effective drug capable of treating the condition.

This might not be the case for much longer, though. Gesynta has been working on a specific drug that targets Microsomal prostaglandin E synthase (mPGES-1), an enzyme present at high levels in inflamed tissues found in endometriosis lesions. Through the inhibition of mPGES-1, downstream inflammation is reduced.

I am excited to see this work develop.
