Anis Feki: Mapping Swiss Caesarean Section Rates by Robson Classification

Anis Feki, Chair of ESHRE, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper publsihed in Swiss Medical Weekly:

“Pleased to share our latest paper in Swiss Medical Weekly: ‘Swiss caesarean section rates according to Robson’s Ten-Group Classification System: an observational study.’

Using Swiss national routine data (2014–2021; 695,733 deliveries), we mapped caesarean section (CS) rates by Robson group and further stratified them by canton and hospital type. Key messages: The largest contributors to overall CS were Group 5 (previous CS) and Group 2 (nulliparous, term, induced / pre-labour CS), together accounting for ~51% of all CS.

For these groups, Swiss CS rates exceeded WHO reference targets, with marked regional variation across cantons.

These findings support more granular perinatal audit and targeted quality-improvement strategies (e.g., VBAC pathways, induction protocols, and strengthened data quality).

My sincere thanks to all co-authors for this team effort: Stephen Adjahoua, Gian-Paolo Klinke, Alexandre Vallée, Benedetta Guani, Nordine Nordine Benali, Jean-Marc Ayoubi, and Arrigo Fruscalzo.
