Addressing Antidepressant Controversies in Pregnancy – CAUSALab
CAUSALab shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper by Sonia Hernandez Diaz et al. published in NEJM:
“New publication in NEJM!
‘Untangling the Risks of Antidepressants in Pregnancy’
The letter (published November 22, 2025) addresses persistent controversy surrounding antidepressants during pregnancy, despite their status as one of the most commonly used and studied medications. The authors highlight confounding by maternal psychiatric as a key challenge confronted by observational studies.
‘[M]uch of what we know about risks posed by SSRIs during pregnancy necessarily comes from observational studies, which present substantial challenges in terms of both study design and interpretation of results.’
Authors: Sonia Hernandez Diaz (CAUSALab, Harvard Program on Perinatal and Pediatric Pharmacoepidemiology (H4P)), Krista Huybrechts (Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, H4P), Brian Bateman (Stanford University School of Medicine)
Read the letter in NEJM Group Perspectives.”
