When Rapid Is Not Really Rapid in Cryopreservation – RBMO
Reproductive BioMedicine Online (RBMO) shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper by Alessandro Bartolacci et al. published in RBMO:
“This new Commentary from Alessandro Bartolacci, Lodovico Parmegiani, and Gábor Vajta aims to encourage constructive dialogue within the field around terminology, specifically in this paper, that used to describe innovations in cryopreservation protocols.
They say that new protocol terms such as ‘rapid’ warming or ‘ultra-fast’ vitrification imply that the speed at which samples goes from cryogenic to body temperature or vice versa have been increased, however, most of these proposed protocols shorten exposure times or eliminate steps without altering thermal kinetics or cryoprotectant uptake and removal dynamics, therefore, naming them ‘rapid’ is arguably misleading.
The authors make a case for more specificity and precision with language, to ensure clear communication, accurate data interpretation and proper clinical practice.
Do you agree in preserving terms, or is there some room for malleable meaning of phrases in our field?
