Damodar Rao: The Saliva Test for Endometriosis – A Step Forward, Not the Finish Line
Damodar Rao, Senior Consultant in Fertility and Laparoscopy and Associate Director at Rao Hospital Coimbatore, shared a post on LinkedIn:
”The Saliva Test for Endometriosis – A Step Forward, Not the Finish Line
Recent news from the UK has generated significant interest in women’s health.
England and Wales have begun rolling out two non – invasive technologies – including a saliva – based microRNA test (Endotest)-to help identify women who may have endometriosis sooner. The aim is to shorten a diagnostic journey that currently averages more than nine years.
This is undoubtedly exciting.
But it’s equally important to understand what this innovation is – and isn’t.
A saliva test will not replace a detailed consultation, clinical examination, imaging, or, when necessary, laparoscopy. Rather, it has the potential to become another valuable tool that helps clinicians identify women who need further evaluation earlier.
For me, the biggest takeaway isn’t the technology itself.
It’s the recognition that women should not have to wait years before their symptoms are taken seriously. Innovation is most meaningful when it reduces suffering – not just when it introduces new technology.”
