Erand Llanaj: For Millions of Women, PCOS Was Never Just About the Ovaries…
Erand Llanaj, Research Scientist in Molecular Epidemiology at Bielefeld University, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper by Helena J Teede et al. published in The Lancet:
“For millions of women, PCOS was never just about the ovaries!
It can affect metabolism, hormones, fertility and long-term health. Yet its old name focused on ‘cysts’: a feature that can mislead patients and clinicians alike…
After a global consensus process involving 14,360 patients and health professionals, PCOS has a proposed new name:
Polyndocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS)
The aim is to describe the condition more accurately, reduce stigma and support more integrated care.
Sometimes changing a name is not cosmetic. It changes what we look for, what we explain, and potentially how seriously the whole person is treated.
