Effect of Micronutrients on Fertility and Aneuploidy Rates in Human Conceptions – RBMO
Reproductive BioMedicine Online (RBMO) shared a post on LinkedIn:
“In their recent review article published in our February issue, David Schütz, Kirstine Huong Lettorp, Isa Amalie Olofsson, and Eva Hoffmann analysed the effect of 66 micronutrients in multiple studies and found evidence that only co-enzyme Q10 and resveratrol may have benefit in several parameters of clinical outcome in IVF, especially in women of an older maternal age.
Of more than 500 studies apparently relevant for this review, only five met eligibility criteria, three RCTs and two in vitro studies with human oocytes, and all had coQ10 and resveratrol as their effective interventions.
The review makes clear that micronutrient supplements are strictly dietary and not medicinal, so are not regulated or subject to efficacy trials for licensing, noting that most are promoted by marketing and social media, with only moderate evidence of efficacy.
The review marks another publication underlining the difficulty of drawing strong conclusions about dietary supplements as an aid to conception and pregnancy, however, the authors note that many women during preconception and pregnancy exhibit insufficient levels of various micronutrients, suggesting that supplementation may reduce complications.
Published open access, the paper can be read in full for free from issue 52.2, now.”
