Lenka Vodstrcil: 2 Distinct, Yet Overlapping, Pathways Leading to a Repeat BV Diagnosis After Therapy
Lenka Vodstrcil, Associate Editor at BMJ-STI, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper she co-authored with colleagues published in The Lancet Obstetrics, Gynaecology, and Women’s Health:
“In our recent paper, published in the new The Lancet Obstetrics, Gynaecology, and Women’s Health journal, we pooled data from 188 couples receiving male-partner treatment for bacterial vaginosis (BV).
We found that ~80% remained BV-free 4 weeks after treatment (historically, cure is closer to 50-60%). Among the ~20% who had a repeat diagnosis at week 4, most hadn’t returned to an optimal vaginal microbiota (measured using Nugent score) after female-directed treatment, and prior to couples resuming sex.
The findings suggest there are two distinct, yet overlapping, pathways leading to a repeat BV diagnosis after therapy – reinfection (which we have shown is mitigated by partner treatment) and persistence of BV-bacteria.
Distinguishing between these pathways and identifying women that need alternative female-directed treatment strategies is critical to improving cure outcomes for more women.
The article is open-access and available now to read!”
