Mahesan Subramaniam: China Unveils First Humanoid Pregnancy Robot
Mahesan Subramaniam, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of TRI International Group, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“China has taken a bold step into the future of biotechnology with the creation of the world’s first humanoid pregnancy robot. Led by Dr. Zhang Qifeng at Nanyang Technological University, researchers have combined robotics with an artificial womb designed to sustain a fetus for ten months and even deliver birth. This innovation could provide new possibilities for couples struggling with infertility and nations facing declining birth rates.
The artificial womb operates by replicating the natural conditions of pregnancy through a nutrient-rich amniotic fluid system that supports fetal growth. This idea builds on past breakthroughs, such as the 2017 experiment where scientists successfully nurtured a premature lamb outside its mother’s body. By refining that concept through robotics, scientists aim to simulate human pregnancy in a controlled, artificial environment, bridging the gap between medicine and machine.
Expected to cost below 100,000 yuan (about $14,000), this technology could soon become more than just theory. However, its arrival also opens serious ethical questions about parenthood, natural birth, and the limits of science. As reproductive robotics evolves, the world will need to decide how far it’s willing to go in reshaping what it means to create life.
