Manar Ata: New Insights on Genomic Impact in Fertility Failures
Manar Ata, Research Specialist at Sidra Medicine, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper publication in the Journal of Translational Medicine:
“Translating Genomic Discovery into Clinical Impact: A Case of Precision Fertility Medicine
I’m thrilled to share our new publication in the Journal of Translational Medicine:
‘Mutational disruption of transcription factor binding and regulatory networks in a case of unexplained total fertilization failure.’
Read the full article.
This work represents a true collaborative bridge between Sidra Medicine’s Reproductive Medicine Unit and the Laboratory of Reproductive Biology (Translational Medicine Division), combining clinical expertise, embryology, genomics, and computational biology to address one of the most elusive forms of infertility.
Through an advanced multi-omics strategy, we identified disrupted transcription factor binding events, impacting calcium signaling and oocyte activation in a patient with total fertilization failure.
A powerful example of reproductive genomics guiding precision medicine: Fadi Choucair, Johnny Awwad, and the IVF team implemented ICSI with assisted oocyte activation, which partially restored fertilization.
This achievement stems from the incredible support of my mentor, Matteo Avella, and the efforts of all co-authors: Fadi Choucair, Johnny Awwad, Prof. Khalid A. Fakhro, Mohamed Nadhir Djekidel, Maria Esteves, Fatima Al Ali, Shoaib Nawaz, Oleksandr Soloviov, Abbirami Sathappan, Elbay Aliyev, and Lina El Taha.
As we continue to push the boundaries between reproductive medicine and functional genomics, I’m especially excited for PMFG 2025 – Sidra’s Precision Medicine and Functional Genomics Conference, where these translational discoveries will take center stage.”
