Committee Opinion on Zygotes Showing 2.1 Pronuclei – Reproductive BioMedicine Online
Reproductive BioMedicine Online (RBMO) shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper by Tammy Lee et al.:
“This scoping review from a team led by Tammy Lee proposes a committee opinion on zygotes showing 2.1 pronuclei (2.1PN zygotes), including a working provisional definition, to guide clinical practice and future studies.
From their analysis, the authors note that greater awareness and accurate classification of 2.1PN zygotes from true 3PN zygotes can improve embryo selection and help embryologists make better decisions for patients; otherwise, viable 2.1PN-derived embryos might have been discarded.
They suggest that, as the assisted reproductive technology field shifts from describing oocytes as ‘abnormally’ fertilised to ‘atypically’ fertilised, evidence-informed clinic policies regarding the clinical use of 2.1PN-derived embryos should evolve accordingly.
Embryos that are derived from atypical 2.1PN fertilisation patterns can increase the number of embryos available for use and give poor prognosis patients, who may not have any 2PN zygotes, an opportunity for transfer.
Published open access, the full paper is available ahead of press from the Clinical Embryology section of our November issue, now.”
