Assessing Folic Acid Impact on Gestational Health – Reproductive BioMedicine Online
Reproductive BioMedicine Online shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper by Carolyn Ledowsky et al. published in RBMO:
“In this systematic review of the health effects of excess folic acid use and high blood folate during preconception and pregnancy, authors Carolyn Ledowsky, Vanessa Scarf, Agata Sobczynska-Malefora, Tristan Carter, Nathan Timbrell, and Amie Steel say that while folic acid supplementation is essential for preventing neural tube defects, excessive intake during preconception and pregnancy may carry risks, particularly for gestational diabetes and neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring.
Given the widespread use of FA supplementation and mandatory food fortification, the authors state there is a pressing need to clearly define safe upper limits for FA supplementation and adequate blood folate concentrations. Additionally, standardising folate testing procedures is essential for accurately assessing and managing folate exposure.
The paper is published open access, available to read in full from our in-press articles section.”
