Sourav Dolai: Japanese Scientists Turn Male Mouse Embryos Into Female Mice

Sourav Dolai, Founder and Subject Matter Expert (SME) of Science Coat, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper by Shogo Matoba et al. published in BioRxiv։

“Scientists Just Did Something Remarkable With Mouse Genetics․

Japanese scientists have reported a fascinating breakthrough in reproductive genetics: they successfully produced female mice from genetic material originating from a male mouse.

The researchers removed the Y chromosome from cells derived from a male mouse, reprogrammed the cells to create an XX genetic arrangement, and used them to develop embryos. These embryos were then implanted into surrogate mothers.

The result? Live female mice genetically derived from the same male mouse. Some developed normally, and at least one was able to produce offspring.

But there’s an important limitation: this has only been demonstrated in mice.

Human chromosomes, cellular reprogramming, and embryonic development are considerably more complex. Whether a similar approach could ever work in humans remains unknown.

Science is moving fast. But understanding where a breakthrough stops is just as important as understanding where it begins.
