Winok Lapidaire: Hypertensive Pregnancy’s Impact on Long-Term Brain Health
Winok Lapidaire, Principal Investigator in Cardiovascular Medicine at University of Oxford, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper published in JAMA Neurology:
“I am very excited to share our new publication in JAMA Neurology: ‘Brain Volumes After Hypertensive Pregnancy and Postpartum Blood Pressure Management’.
We discovered that among women who had hypertension during pregnancy, blood pressure management in the immediate postpartum period, guided by home monitoring and physician input, was associated with higher white matter volumes compared with usual care. Among women receiving usual care, those with preeclampsia had smaller volumes in certain deep brain regions than those with gestational hypertension. Importantly, this difference was no longer seen when blood pressure was optimally managed after birth.
Brain health is central to quality of life, yet the impact of hypertensive pregnancy on long-term brain health remains underrecognised in both clinical care and research. These findings suggest the early postpartum period may be a critical opportunity to improve long-term brain and cognitive outcomes.
