Madhur Hamine: IVF in India Remains Deeply Underpenetrated Despite 3000+ Centres
Madhur Hamine, Managing Director at Oospheere IVF Services Pvt Ltd, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“India already has 3000+ IVF centres doing ~3 lakh cycles.
That’s ~10 cycles per centre per month.
So the market is saturated.”
This is a commonly quoted industry narrative.
- The math is correct.
- The conclusion is not.
Let’s decode it hear
3,00,000 cycles ÷ 3000 centres = 100 cycles/year
100 ÷ 12 = ~8–10 cycles/month
But this assumes uniform distribution across centres.
—
The ground reality
Top centres (metro brands): 40–100+ cycles/month
Mid-level centres: 15–30 cycles/month
Majority centres (Tier 2/3): 2–8 cycles/month
The ’10 cycles/month’ is just an average illusion
—
What this hides
Patient concentration in few centres
Massive underutilization elsewhere
Poor geographic access
Weak referral ecosystems
—
Now look at the real picture
In India 16–22 million infertile couples
Only ~3–4 lakh IVF cycles annually
IVF penetration: just 1.5–2.2%
> That means ~98% couples never reach IVF treatment
—
Global context
Israel / Denmark: ~30%
USA: ~16–18%
Europe: ~6–9%
China: ~4–5%
India: ~2%
—
The truth hear
India is not saturated.
India is severely underpenetrated and poorly distributed.
—
What India actually needs
Not just more centres —
but right centres in the right locations
Tier 2 / Tier 3 / Tier 4 expansion
Strong fertility OPD funnel
Ethical counselling & awareness
Collaborative IVF models
—
Final thought
> The problem is not ‘too many IVF centres’
The problem is ‘too few accessible IVF centres’
And until we solve this—
the real demand will remain invisible.
Note: Above numbers are based upon studies and sensus which is of last decade, current assumption may different than these numbers
—
India needs 5000+ IVF centres.
Not as a business statement.
As a healthcare necessity.”
