Xavier Carcopino: Early and Organized HPV Vaccination Saves Lives

Xavier Carcopino, APHM Public Assistance – Hospitals of Marseille at PUPH, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“A new Swedish study published in the BMJ brings an extremely strong message: HPV vaccination provides long-term protection against invasive cervical cancer and there are no signs that its effectiveness will decrease over time.

But above all, it confirms an essential point of public health: we must vaccinate early. Protection is greatest when vaccination is carried out early, before viral exposure. A later catch-up may still be of interest, but it does not offer the same effectiveness. Thus, not only should vaccination be carried out early, but also as part of vaccination programmes organised in schools. It is in these cohorts that the benefit observed is most pronounced.

The message is therefore simple: vaccinate early, vaccinate widely, vaccinate in an organized way.

This data will feed into our discussions at the World Colposcopy Congress that we are organizing with the SFCPCV for the first time in France, in Versailles from June 4 to 6, 2026. We will also discuss the most recent advances in HPV-related prevention, screening, colposcopy and pathologies.
