Major Breakthrough in Treatment of Infertility in Patients With PCOS – Saint Joseph Hospital

“Major medical breakthrough at Saint Joseph’s Hospital for the treatment of infertility in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
For the first time in France, Saint Joseph Hospital in Marseille is implementing biphasic in vitro maturation of oocytes (CAPA-MIV) associated with oocyte vitrification, as part of the OPKAPAMIV clinical research project led by the Centre Sainte Colette.
Developed for patients with polycystic ovary syndrome, at high risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, this approach could be offered to patients wishing to preserve their fertility, especially in situations where ovulation stimulation is not possible. It involves the collection of immature oocytes without hormonal stimulation, followed by maturation of the oocytes in the laboratory under controlled conditions, before their subsequent vitrification or fertilisation.
The deployment of this technique is based on a structured international collaboration, combining the expertise of a Belgian scientific team (CAPA culture systems developed by Prof. Smitz), the clinical-biological technical skills for the development of the CAPAMIV system developed in Vietnam, in particular thanks to Prof. Vuong, and finally the clinical-biological team of the Sainte Colette center of the Saint Joseph Hospital, expert in oocyte vitrification. The three teams met in Marseille with the aim of on-site training of the Ste Colette team in the CAPAMIV technique. A project supported by the Département des Bouches-du-Rhône, the Laboratoire Ferring and the Densore laboratory.
The first pick-ups took place on 8 and 9 April 2026, marking a key milestone after several years of regulatory, technical and ethical preparation.
OPKAPAMIV illustrates Saint Joseph’s Hospital’s commitment to innovative, safer and less invasive medical solutions adapted to complex infertility situations, while actively contributing to clinical research.”
