RCOG Welcomes New Tobacco Law as Step Toward a Smokefree Generation
Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists | RCOG shared a post by Action on Smoking and Health (UK) on LinkedIn:
“We welcome the news that the Tobacco and Vapes Act has received Royal Assent this week in Parliament, marking an important step towards a smokefree generation.
The RCOG has consistently supported these measures, including our response to the UK Government’s 2023 consultation and our support for the bill as it entered Parliament in 2024.
Raising the age of sale for tobacco products so that anyone born on or after 1 January 2009 will never be legally sold tobacco will protect the public, the NHS and the economy from the harms of smoking.
Given the significant harms of smoking to maternal and fetal health, this law represents an important opportunity to improve pregnancy outcomes, reduce health inequalities, and support better health for women across their lives.”
Quoting Action on Smoking and Health (UK)’s post:
“The Tobacco and Vapes Act is now law.
We are delighted that the Tobacco and Vapes Act has received royal assent, creating a future free from the harms of tobacco for generations to come. This is truly a historic moment for public health.”
