Christopher Robinson: The Vaginal Microbiota and Its Role in Labor Success
Christopher Robinson, Associate Professor Maternal Fetal Medicine at University of South Carolina, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Vaginal microbiota in late pregnancy associates with the outcomes of planned induced labor: a multicenter prospective cohort study – Vaginal microbiome transplantation experiments in rats and pregnancy outcomes:
(A) Procedure for the vaginal microbiome transplantation experiment in rats.
(B) The microbial composition of all the transplanted samples.
(C) Video image of a rat after delivery in group A.
(D) Video image of a rat after delivery in group B.
(E) Video image of a rat after delivery in group C.
(F) Video image of a rat that died due to dystocia in group A.
(G) There was no significant difference in the start time of labor among the 3 groups (P=.52) (group A: transplanted with microbiota from the IOL failure group, group B: transplanted with microbiota from the group with successful delivery within 24 h, group C: received phosphate-buffered saline as control).
(H) There were significant differences in labor duration among the 3 groups (P=.0003). Group A had the longest labor duration and was followed by group B, and group C had the shortest duration.
(I) The average weight of newborn rats in group A and group B was also not significantly different (P=.71), but the average weight of newborn rats in group C was significantly higher than that in group A (P<.0001) and B (P<.0001).
(J) There was no significant difference in the number of newborn rats among the 3 groups (P=0.38). ∗ indicates P<.05, and ∗∗ indicates P<.01.”
