Global Pre-Eclampsia Summit, Aligning Priorities for Impact – The Lancet Obstetrics, Gynaecology, and Women’s Health
The Lancet Obstetrics, Gynaecology, and Women’s Health shared a post on LinkedIn:
“In a recently published Perspective piece, Femi Oladapo Caroline Homer and Hadiza S Galadanci discuss the recently convened WHO Global Pre-eclampsia Summit held in Kigali. They argue that progress in reducing deaths from hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, particularly pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, has lagged behind other maternal health priorities despite causing substantial maternal, fetal, and newborn mortality worldwide. This highlights persistent challenges including underinvestment in research and development, limited access to proven interventions and diagnostics, fragmented guidance, and poor coordination across research, policy, implementation, access, and accountability efforts.
The central message of the Summit was that meaningful progress will require a coordinated, systems-wide approach rather than isolated interventions. Bringing together stakeholders from more than 50 countries, the Summit aimed to develop a draft Global Roadmap and Call to Action focused on five interconnected areas: research and innovation, norms and standards, access to health products, implementation, and advocacy and accountability. The authors conclude that sustained alignment of stakeholders, institutions, and investments is essential to transform pre-eclampsia from a fragmented agenda into a coordinated global movement capable of improving outcomes for women and newborns at scale.”
