What Is a Biochemical Pregnancy and Why Does It Happen? – Fertility Plus

“A Positive Pregnancy Test, Then No Sac: What Does It Mean?

Experiencing a biochemical pregnancy can be confusing and emotional. This early pregnancy loss occurs when the pregnancy hormone, β-hCG, is detected, but levels fall before a pregnancy sac appears on ultrasound.

A recent study in Human Reproduction analyzed the causes of biochemical pregnancy loss across various embryo transfer methods. The findings revealed that biochemical loss rates were not significantly different among tested embryos, personalized embryo transfers, or transfers using either own or donor eggs.

In fact, the loss rates were 8.2% for own-oocyte transfers and 4.9% for donor-oocyte transfers. This suggests that while embryo quality and uterine lining are important, a biochemical pregnancy should not be attributed to a single cause.

The process of early implantation is complex, involving multiple factors such as hormones, immune signals, and timing. One biochemical loss does not provide all the answers about what may have gone wrong.

It’s important to recognize that a biochemical pregnancy is real and matters. Understanding this can help in navigating fertility journeys with more clarity and support.”
