Christopher Robinson: Hilary O.D. Critchley Named an AJOG Giant in Obstetrics and Gynecology
Christopher Robinson, Associate Professor Maternal Fetal Medicine at University of South Carolina, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“AJOG Giants in Obstetrics and Gynecology: Hilary O.D. Critchley: a physician-scientist who transformed the understanding of menstruation – Dr Hilary O.D. Critchley, BSc (Hons), MBChB (Hons), MD, DSc, FRCOG, FMedSci, FRSE, a clinical academic gynecologist, holds a personal chair in reproductive medicine at The University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom, and is an honorary consultant (gynecology) at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. She has held senior leadership roles in the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine at the University of Edinburgh and is a past member and chair of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) Committee on Menstrual Disorders and Related Health Impacts.
Dr Hilary has been designated a Giant in Obstetrics and Gynecology for pioneering work that elucidated the biology of menstruation and the understanding of abnormal uterine bleeding, including heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB). Her research program for more than 30 years has focused on the biology of the endometrium, disorders of menstruation, and abnormal uterine bleeding from biological and clinical perspectives. Her commitment to addressing the problems of menstrual bleeding embraces not only how research can enhance our understanding and care but also how to ‘tackle the taboo’ around menstruation.
Through decades of study, Dr Hilary and her team transformed menstruation from a clinical observation into a molecularly defined physiological process, demonstrating that progesterone withdrawal initiates a self-limited inflammatory and reparative sequence within the endometrium. By linking endocrine signaling, inflammation, and tissue repair, Dr Hilary provided a framework for understanding both normal menstruation and its disorders, informing the local mechanisms underpinning medical therapies for abnormal uterine bleeding, and redefining how physiology and clinical care intersect in women’s health.”
