Priyadatt Patel: A Quiet Inefficiency in How We Approach Infertility Deserves More Attention

Priyadatt Patel, Senior Gynecologist, Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeon, IVF and Endometriosis Programme Lead at Balaji Horizon Women’s Hospital, shared on LinkedIn:

“A quiet inefficiency in how we approach infertility deserves more attention.

When a couple struggles to conceive, the evaluation still, too often, begins and ends with the woman. Months of investigation and treatment pass before anyone asks the man to do a semen analysis, a test that is simple, inexpensive, and quick.

Male factor contributes to roughly half of infertility. Yet it is frequently the last thing assessed rather than the first.

The consequence is not just clinical; it is human. Couples lose time they cannot afford, and women often carry the entire weight of investigation, and sometimes the blame, for something that was never theirs alone to solve.

The correction is straightforward. Evaluate both partners together, from the start. It shortens the path to a diagnosis, it distributes the emotional load fairly, and it simply reflects the biology.

Infertility is a shared condition. Our approach to investigating it should be too.
