ACOG Calls for Routine Cannabis Screening as Use Reaches 7% in Pregnancy – Fertility Plus
Fertility Plus shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Cannabis is linked to higher rates of preterm birth, low birth weight, and neurodevelopmental issues in babies. Many still think it’s safe—it’s not risk-free!
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) now calls for universal screening of all reproductive-aged individuals for cannabis use during prepregnancy, pregnancy, and lactation. This shift responds to rising cannabis use—now up to 7% in pregnancy—amid nationwide legalization. Research confirms increased risks of preterm birth, low birth weight, and neurodevelopmental impacts in exposed infants. Clinicians are urged to use interviews and validated tools, avoiding biologic drug tests that can result in inequitable care. ACOG highlights the need for evidence-based counseling and risk-reduction strategies personalized to each patient.”
