Diethert Manfred: Lab-Grown Babies Aren’t Science Fiction Anymore

Diethert Manfred, Former Headmaster at Special Needs School, shared on LinkedIn:

“Lab-grown babies aren’t science fiction anymore – they’re inching toward reality, though not the finish line yet.

Two fronts are moving fast: in vitro gametogenesis (IVG), which creates sperm and eggs from stem cells, and synthetic embryo models built entirely in the lab. In August 2025, Japan became the first country to approve research generating human embryos from stem cells, no eggs or sperm required.

Companies like Gameto and Conception are racing to commercialize stem-cell-derived eggs, with Gameto’s fertility platform already in Phase 3 trials. Scientists have even created mice from two male parents using stem-cell-derived eggs and surrogates.

What hasn’t happened: no human has been gestated outside a body, and no baby has been born from lab-made gametes.

The ASRM issued a 2026 ethics opinion flagging the safety and societal questions that still need answers before any of this reaches the clinic.

The science is moving quicker than the ethics debate. Worth watching closely.”
