Deirdre McCarthy: Delighted to Work with Clare Mansfield on Financing an IVF Journey

“Delighted to work once again with Clare Mansfield of Flowering Fertility on financing an IVF journey.

Women may undertake IVF as solos or as part of a couple. The Flowering Fertility programme offers peer group supports and expert access while navigating this tricky and largely uncharted process.

This is FLIT Financial Literacy’s 4th time to collaborate as a financial educator with the Flowering programme, and we used the opportunity to drill into some of the questions we’ve observed:

  • Why is it so difficult to talk about money in the context of building a family and IVF?

Hint: Culturally, we consider discussing money to be a bit rude and transactional, so it can feel disrespectful to our family hopes and joy. It can also surface differences between partners, with one feeling ‘this MUST be achieved regardless of cost’ while the other secretly frets about how to hold their finances together.

  • What cost levers are within our control?

Tax reclaims, choices of health insurance policy, drug payment scheme, negotiation with clinics, timing of payments and cashflow management.

Choosing who pays certain medical bills so that tax credits are fully accessed.

Does it make sense to sign up for an all-included package? What does all-included actually mean?

Supports, asking for help: government and philanthropic schemes.

Accessing or negotiating employer benefits (even being aware of potential supports when choosing an employer).

Help from friends and family, tax implications.

Disclosure, how much information to share.

Being open to accepting loving help and goodwill.

Each time I engage with the Flowering Fertility programme, I am reminded of the lovely sense of peace, calm and positivity that Clare Mansfield and Shane McCarthy bring to participants.”
