Nick Nation: Diet and Targeted Supplements before IVF
Nick Nation, Founder and Fertility and Women’s Health Dietitian at Nutrition Nation, shared on LinkedIn:
”When a couple’s been trying for a while, the instinct is often to overhaul everything overnight. It rarely needs to be that dramatic.
A new randomised trial this year (Reproductive BioMedicine Online) followed 180 women going through IVF. One group followed a pro-fertility eating pattern… oily fish, wholegrains, plenty of veg… paired with targeted supplements: omega-3, vitamin D, folate and B12. The other group got standard advice. The diet-and-supplement group had noticeably higher fertilisation and embryo formation rates.
Worth being straight about… the food and the supplements were tested together, so we can’t say how much each did on its own. But the direction is promising.
Think of it like soil quality before you plant. Eggs and sperm are developing for months before a cycle, and what goes in during that window seems to matter.
None of this replaces the fertility team’s work… it sits alongside it. Always happy to work with the clinicians looking after these couples.”
