Sarah Rivera: Women’s Health Products Need Clinical Expertise Behind Them
Sarah Rivera, Former Director of Operations at Captchat, shared on LinkedIn:
“Over the last few months, I’ve been approached by four different companies building apps in women’s health and fertility.
I’ve started noticing a pattern that concerns me.
The teams are talented, but in several cases, a women’s health clinician/expert hasn’t been involved in building the product.
If you know me, you know I love all things women’s health. Give me something that can help women understand their fertility, navigate treatment, or feel less alone, and I’m all in.
But I’ve walked away from some of these conversations disappointed.
I’ve been asked to provide clinical expertise without compensation. I’ve also been asked to join sales calls, where having a nurse present adds clinical credibility to a product I didn’t actually help develop.
That makes me uncomfortable.
If my credentials help establish clinical credibility, then clinical expertise needs to actually be behind the product.
I’ve seen it done well, too. I’ve worked with companies that paid for clinical expertise and really listened to my feedback.
The difference is palpable.
AI and engineers can build incredible things. But when we’re creating products that guide women through deeply personal healthcare decisions, who is making sure the information is safe, accurate, and clinically appropriate?
I’d love to hear from other nurses, embryologists, OB/GYNs, REIs, and women’s health professionals:
Are you being brought in to help build these products? Maybe I’m in the minority. I hope so!
