Stefanie Valakas: The Value a Fertility Dietitian Can Add to the Fertility Clinic Arena
Stefanie Valakas, Founder, Expert Fertility Dietitian and Nutritionist at The Dietologist, shared on LinkedIn a paper by Gabriela Halpern et al. published in JBRA Assisted Reproduction:
“I have the opportunity to step into many fertility clinics across Sydney, all different in their own way, but I always notice one thing is pretty consistent across the board.
There’s always an array of snacks and drinks in the waiting room, from popcorn to biscuits, mints to juice boxes. It’s a thoughtful touch when perhaps you’re feeling nervous, worried, a bit sick in your tummy thanks to medications and the like.
But one thing I’ve always scratched my head at is why fertility clinics haven’t jumped on this 2023 research paper, which showed a significant improvement in implantation rate in those undergoing IVF who drank a juice of beetroot, watermelon and ginger every day for the two-week wait.
Whenever I tell my patients this stat, their jaw drops! I think every fertility clinic’s fridge should be stocked with this combo and given to people as they leave from their transfer with the information attached.
This is the value a fertility dietitian can add to the fertility clinic arena, more than just consultations, but a whole-of-clinic philosophy and support for patients beyond the medicine itself.”
