“A Reflection from Inside the IVF Laboratory

For many years, I believed that my role as an embryologist was mainly about creating and caring for embryos.

With experience, I have come to understand that our role is also about helping patients make informed decisions.

Science is the foundation of assisted reproduction.

However, science does not always give us one clear answer for every situation. Sometimes, there may be several reasonable options.

In these situations, evidence is essential, but it is not the only thing that matters.

Every patient has different needs, values, priorities, and personal circumstances. This is why shared decision-making is so important.

As healthcare professionals, our responsibility is not only to apply scientific knowledge. We also need to help patients understand their options, recognise the uncertainties, and feel confident in decisions that may have a significant impact on their lives.

Personalised care is not simply about choosing the right treatment or technique. It is about understanding the individual behind each case and helping them choose the option that is most appropriate for their situation.

Because sometimes, caring means not only doing the science, but also helping people understand it.”
