An Updated RCOG Scientific Impact Paper on Elective Egg Freezing Has Been Published
Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) shared a post on LinkedIn:
”We have published an updated RCOG Scientific Impact Paper on elective egg freezing, reflecting the growing number of women choosing to freeze their eggs and exploring why people may choose to do so and what the evidence tells us about the procedure.
We’re pleased to see the paper referenced in recent media coverage of egg freezing, reflecting the growing number of women choosing this option. The Independent coverage centred around US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s decision to freeze her eggs, which she has said, ‘helped her feel more in control of her life.’ She is also documenting her experience on Instagram.
Her experience reflects a wider trend. Egg-freezing cycles in the UK trebled between 2016 and 2021, and people may choose to freeze their eggs for a range of reasons, including career and relationship circumstances.
Egg freezing can increase the chance of having a baby in the future by preserving eggs at the age they are frozen. However, it does not guarantee a future pregnancy, and success depends on a number of factors, particularly age at the time of freezing.
