Egg freezing is often discussed as though the eggs will inevitably be needed later. The UK figures tell a more interesting story.
In 2023, clinics recorded ‘6,932 egg-freezing cycles’, compared with around ‘700 cycles using thawed eggs’. The average age at freezing was ’35’, and the average age at thawing was ’40’.
These figures do not tell us the eventual chance that any one woman will return to use her eggs, because the freezing and thawing cycles do not represent the same cohort. What they do show is that egg freezing often means preserving an option for later rather than using it immediately.
That is perhaps the clearest way to think about it: egg freezing cannot guarantee a baby. It can preserve reproductive choice and time.
