Mandavi Rai: What Does Embryo Grading Really Tell Us?
Mandavi Rai, Senior Gynaecologist and IVF Consultant at Divine Women and IVF Clinic, shared on LinkedIn:
”4AA. 4AB. 4BB. What does embryo grading really tell us?
Embryo grading is an important part of the IVF laboratory process. It provides a morphological assessment of the blastocyst and helps clinicians and embryologists evaluate embryos for transfer or cryopreservation.
The grading system broadly considers:
- 4 – Blastocyst expansion
- First letter – Inner Cell Mass (ICM)
- Second letter – Trophectoderm (TE)
A 4AA embryo has favourable morphology, while 4AB and 4BB represent different combinations of cellular morphology.
But an important message for patients is this:
An embryo grade is not a guarantee of pregnancy.
Embryo genetics, maternal age, uterine factors and the overall clinical picture all contribute to reproductive outcomes.
For patients navigating IVF, understanding the terminology can make an otherwise complex journey a little easier.
Every embryo has potential. Our role is to combine careful assessment, science and personalised clinical decision-making.”
