Carmen Mair: Stop Buying Fertility Supplements Before You Know What You’re Actually Trying to Correct

Carmen Mair, Fertility Nutritionist, shared on LinkedIn:

”Stop buying fertility supplements before you know what you’re actually trying to correct.

More supplements do not automatically mean better egg quality.

Before adding another bottle to the cupboard, I’d want to understand the bigger picture – and which tests are actually relevant to you.

Seven areas worth considering:

  • Thyroid – TSH and free T4 may be useful depending on your history and symptoms.
  • Iron – haemoglobin alone can miss depleted iron stores, so ferritin and iron studies can add important context.
  • Vitamin D – test before reaching for high-dose supplementation.
  • B12 and folate – particularly when diet, medication use, gut issues or previous results suggest a reason to investigate.
  • Glucose regulation – fasting glucose, HbA1c and sometimes fasting insulin may be relevant, particularly with PCOS, irregular ovulation or signs of insulin resistance.
  • Prolactin – not a test every woman needs, but worth considering when cycles are disrupted, periods disappear or symptoms suggest elevated prolactin.
  • Reproductive hormones – with the timing right. FSH and estradiol are generally assessed early in the follicular phase when indicated. Progesterone is better timed to your ovulation rather than automatically testing on ‘day 21.’ AMH can be measured throughout the cycle, but it reflects ovarian reserve – not egg quality.

The point isn’t to order every blood test under the sun.

It’s to stop guessing.

Supplements should fill a genuine gap or have a clear purpose – not compensate for missing information.
