“Is 30 really the ‘Perfect’ age to freeze your eggs?
You’ve probably heard:
‘If you’re going to freeze your eggs, do it at 30.’
But fertility science is more nuanced than a birthday.
There is no magic number.
Egg freezing works by preserving the age of the eggs at the time they are frozen. And age matters because both egg quantity and egg quality change over time. Fertility begins to decline around 30, and the decline becomes faster in the mid-30s.
But that does not mean:
- 30 = perfect
- 31 = too late
- 29 = must freeze
What actually matters?
- Age – Younger eggs generally have better reproductive potential when frozen, although individual outcomes vary.
- Ovarian reserve – AMH and antral follicle count can help estimate how many eggs might be retrieved – but they do not guarantee a future baby.
- Number of mature eggs – Freezing eggs isn’t simply about having them stored. The number of mature eggs preserved can influence the chance of future success.
- Your reproductive timeline – Someone planning pregnancy soon may have a very different decision from someone expecting to delay parenthood for many years.
And here’s the part most social-media posts miss:
Egg freezing is not an insurance policy.
It can preserve an option for future family building – but it cannot guarantee a pregnancy or live birth.
ASRM also notes that current evidence is not strong enough to identify one universally ‘optimal’ age for planned egg freezing. Outcomes tend to be better when eggs are frozen at younger ages, but the decision should be individualized.
So, should women freeze their eggs at 30?
Maybe. Maybe not.
The better question is:
‘What does my fertility timeline look like – and what options make sense for me?’
Egg freezing is a personal reproductive decision, not a deadline attached to a birthday.
The future of fertility care isn’t about finding one perfect age.
It’s about making better-informed decisions at the right time for each woman.
