Ritu Anand: What Would I Tell an IVF Couple in the 1980s?

Ritu Anand, Specialist in Reproductive Medicine and Infertility at Orchid IVF and Fertility Services, shared on LinkedIn:

“If I were an IVF specialist in the 1980s, what would I tell a couple trying to build their family?

IVF was still writing its first chapters.

The science was evolving, technology was limited, and success was far from what we know today.

Yet, some advice would remain timeless:

  • Understand your fertility early.
Age can influence fertility, and knowing your options can help you make informed decisions.
  • Don’t wait too long to seek help.
Infertility is a medical condition – not something to feel ashamed of or simply ‘wait out.’
  • Be prepared for uncertainty.
IVF has always offered hope, but never guarantees. The journey requires patience, realistic expectations and emotional support.

And most importantly, don’t blame yourself.

Struggling to conceive is not a failure. Your worth is never defined by your fertility journey.

Four decades later, IVF has transformed dramatically from the early days of assisted reproduction to the advanced treatments available today.

The technology has changed.

The science has evolved.

But the need for compassionate care, honest guidance and hope remains exactly the same.
