Huzaifa Gulzar։ What’s the Difference Between HEPA and ULPA Filters?

Huzaifa Gulzar, Andrology Technologist (IVF) at Shifa International Hospitals, shared on LinkedIn։

“HEPA vs ULPA Filters – What’s the Difference?

When we talk about cleanrooms, IVF/embryology laboratories, hospitals, and other controlled environments, air filtration is a critical part of contamination control.

 HEPA – High-Efficiency Particulate Air

  • Typically ≥99.97% efficient at 0.3 µm
  • Widely used in laboratories, hospitals, cleanrooms, and HVAC systems
  • Lower airflow resistance compared with ULPA

 ULPA – Ultra-Low Penetration Air

  • Can provide ≥99.999% efficiency at specified test particle sizes
  • Designed for environments requiring extremely high particle removal
  • Generally has higher pressure drop and energy requirements

In IVF and Embryology Laboratories, maintaining appropriate air quality is especially important because environmental contamination can affect the laboratory environment and potentially embryo culture conditions.

Clean air – Better contamination control – Safer laboratory environment․”
