”Genes vs Environment
Why do two women with similar genetic risks sometimes have completely different reproductive journeys?
Maybe the answer isn’t found in DNA alone.
Our genes provide biological instructions-but hormones, nutrition, metabolic health, stress, environmental exposures, age, and other factors can influence how those instructions are expressed.
This is where one of the most fascinating areas of women’s health research emerges:
Gene-environment interaction.
Researchers are exploring how these interactions may contribute to differences in:
- Ovarian function and reproductive aging
- PCOS and endometriosis susceptibility
- Fertility and pregnancy outcomes
- Reproductive cancer risk
- Hormonal and metabolic health
And there is another layer.
Epigenetics is helping researchers understand how environmental signals can influence gene activity without changing the underlying DNA sequence.
But this doesn’t mean our environment simply ‘switches genes on or off.’ Human reproductive biology is far more complex-and many of these relationships are still being investigated.
The future of reproductive medicine may therefore move beyond asking, ‘What genes does she have?’
It may also ask:
‘How are those genes interacting with the world around her?’
That shift could help researchers move toward more individualized approaches to risk assessment, prevention, fertility care, and reproductive health.
The most important story may not be genes OR environment.
It may be the biology created by their interaction.
At GFWH 2026, emerging research across genetics, reproductive medicine, fertility, and precision women’s health will take the global stage.
