Vikram Sinai Talaulikar: Global Prevalence of Vasomotor Symptoms in the Menopause Transition
Vikram Sinai Talaulikar, Specialist in Reproductive Endocrinology at The LUNA Clinic, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper he co-authored with colleagues published in Climacteric:
”This is our systematic review, which looked at the global prevalence of vasomotor symptoms in the menopause transition.
Vasomotor symptoms (VMS – hot flushes and night sweats) are among the most common symptoms experienced during the menopause transition.
Although these symptoms are widely reported, the prevalence of VMS varies across different regions of the world. It is unclear whether these differences reflect biological variation, cultural influences or differences in how symptoms are assessed and discussed.
The study reviewed data from 41 population-based studies published since 2014. We examined how common VMS are among perimenopausal and postmenopausal women, aged 40-65 years, across five global regions. More than half of women in every region reported experiencing VMS.
Prevalence ranged from around 54% in Africa to 74% in the Americas and Europe.
However, there was considerable variation between studies, even within the same region. This suggests that menopause symptoms are influenced not only by hormonal changes, but also by social, cultural, and methodological factors.
Overall, these findings show that VMS are common worldwide and highlight the importance of ensuring menopause care is culturally sensitive and accessible.
Strengths of our review: a comprehensive and updated search strategy, alongside a large aggregate sample size and a meta-analytic approach. Limitations include high heterogeneity observed across pooled prevalence, publication bias, studies differed in their measurement of VMS, differences in symptom-severity thresholds, and VMS measures such as the MENQOL and the MRS may not fully capture culturally specific expressions or interpretations of symptoms in non-Western populations.
