Nitiz Murdia: 5,000 Indian Rupees and a 2-Room Fertility Clinic in 1988…

“5,000 Indian Rupees and a two-room fertility clinic
In 1988, Dr. Ajay Murdia walked away from a secure government job with 5,000 Indian Rupees. He opened a two-room infertility clinic in Udaipur to treat something most families refused to talk about. In those years, infertility had one explanation in most Indian homes: the woman.
So he did two things that made people uncomfortable. He named the clinic after my mother, Indira. And he set up one of India’s early sperm banks to prove a point very few wanted to hear. Men are half of this story too. Society did not exactly welcome him. My brother Kshitiz Murdia has spoken about that openly, and I believe it took more courage than any business plan ever could. In 2011, Kshitiz and I joined him, and that two-room clinic became a group.
Today it is 200+ centres across India. I’ve thought a lot about why it worked. It wasn’t the 5,000 Indian Rupees, and it wasn’t the timing. He built the work around an uncomfortable truth, and kept saying it until the country caught up. Every lasting business I admire has one of those at its core.
What is the uncomfortable truth your work is built on?”
