Shweta Rajani Goswami: Ask What IVF Will Cost You in the End, Not What It Costs to Begin

Shweta Rajani Goswami, Founder and Medical Director of Zeeva Fertility, shared on LinkedIn։

“Every IVF clinic in India gets the same phone call many times a day, and it almost always starts with the price.

I understand why.

For most couples, this is money saved over years, and they want to spend it wisely.

But the price quoted on that call is rarely the price at the end. Most people, I feel, do not do the maths.

So see, let me explain how it usually happens.

A centre says IVF at one lakh, sometimes even less. The couple feels relieved and starts.

Then, during the cycle, things get added:

  • embryo glue,
  • laser-assisted hatching,
  • genetic testing of embryos, whether it is needed or not.

To keep the starting price low, there may be cost-cutting on the injections or on quality control in the lab, which nobody tells you about.

Fewer good embryos are made.

The transfer does not work.

And the couple is back to starting a whole new cycle, with the same price on the phone and a much bigger bill in total.

Now take a centre that is 20 to 30% more expensive upfront.

They use the right dose of injections, the lab is run well, and more good-quality embryos get frozen. If the first transfer does not work, the next attempt is often a frozen embryo transfer at a much lower cost, not a full cycle again.

Which one was really cheaper?

I am not saying the most expensive centre is the best one.

IVF needs investment, and a clinic has to sustain itself. But the cheapest start is very often not the cheapest end.

When someone calls us and asks the cost, I tell them it is a range. It could be 1.3 lakh, it could be 4 lakhs, depending on what you need and which injections and add-ons you actually need.

So on that first call, ask different questions.

  1. What exactly is included in this price?
  2. How does your lab do for a woman of my age?
  3. Which add-ons will you suggest, and why?
  4. If the first transfer fails, what does the next step cost?

Ask what the IVF will cost you in the end.

Not what it costs to begin.”
