Muhammad Qasim: Excluded Cells and Embryo Biopsy
Muhammad Qasim, Andrologist at LIFE (Lahore Institute of Fertility and Endocrinology), shared on LinkedIn:
“Excluded Cells and Embryo Biopsy
As embryologists, we don’t always get textbook blastocysts.
One of the most nuanced clinical decisions we face during a trophectoderm biopsy is handling embryos with excluded cells or cellular debris.
Excluded Cells – Cells that didn’t incorporate into the inner cell mass or the trophectoderm during compaction present a unique technical and ethical challenge.
- The Diagnostic Risk
Including these degenerated, lysed or excluded cells in biopsy sample can cause DNA degradation lead to amplification failure or skew PGT results potentially mimicking mosaicism or aneuploidy.
- The Precision Solution
It takes a highly skilled eye and masterful micromanipulation to deliberately avoid these excluded fragments ensuring we only harvest viable representative cells from healthy trophectoderm.
Successfully managing these complex cases requires a deep understanding of embryo morphokonetics, sharp laser, precision and absolute composure under the microscope.
Protecting the integrity of the genetic data while prioritizing embryo viability is where true laboratory excellence shines.”
