Asima Ahmad: Working Hard to Ensure that Access to Fertility Care Is a Reality for People Across the Globe
Asima Ahmad, Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer at Carrot and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Specialist at Reproductive Medicine Institute, shared on LinkedIn:
“Today is World Fertility Day. The World Health Organization estimates that roughly 1 in 6 adults worldwide experience infertility at some point in their lives.
Rates are similar in high-income and low- and middle-income countries. But access to care varies widely, and in most countries, people still pay for treatment largely out of pocket.
I see this in my work every day. As a reproductive endocrinologist in Chicago, I care for patients who have spent years trying to get answers. As co-founder and Chief Medical Officer of Carrot, I see how often coverage determines whether someone can get care at all.
A few things I want people to know today:
- Infertility is a medical condition. An evaluation is generally recommended after 12 months of trying if you’re under 35, or 6 months if you’re 35 or older. If you’re over 40, have irregular cycles, or have a known fertility concern, you don’t need to wait.
- Infertility affects men and women. When trying with a partner, both partners should be evaluated from the start.
- Many causes are treatable. Getting a workup can help us understand what’s going on and which treatments may help.
- Check your benefits. You may have coverage for testing, medications, or treatment that you didn’t know about. Find out what’s covered and what you would pay out of pocket.
If you’re going through infertility, I know getting care can take more time, money, and persistence than it should. That needs to change. This work is my mission, and we are all working hard to ensure that access to fertility care is not just a desire, but a reality for people across the globe.”
