Aïda Pujol Masana: Without the Clinician and the Embryologist, There Is No IVF Clinic

Aïda Pujol Masana, Founder of Aïda Embryologist Clarity and Calm in Embryology and IVF Laboratory Director at NatuVitro, shared on LinkedIn:

“Without the clinician and the embryologist, there is no IVF clinic.

Today marks one year since I returned to the IVF laboratory, after two and a half years away from daily laboratory practice.

Coming back has reminded me that embryology is much more than performing laboratory techniques. It is a discipline built on knowledge, experience, responsibility and teamwork.

Assisted reproduction is a team effort. Every professional matters. But at its core, an IVF treatment relies on two essential areas of expertise: clinical medicine and embryology. Neither can work without the other.

And yet, the value of embryology is not always fully recognised.

A Master’s degree provides the academic foundations, but becoming a fully autonomous embryologist requires extensive hands-on training and supervised practice across all areas of the laboratory, including specialised procedures such as embryo biopsy.

In my experience, this process can take 12 to 18 months. It requires a significant investment of time and expertise, both from the person being trained and from the experienced colleagues supporting them.

Having qualified graduates available does not necessarily mean having experienced, fully autonomous embryologists.

Building a skilled laboratory team takes time. Recognising the knowledge, responsibility and experience of its professionals is essential to excellent reproductive medicine.

Embryologists are not simply part of the IVF process. They are essential to it.

A reflection from inside the IVF laboratory.”
