“Day 3
Gametes: The Foundation of Life
Gametes are specialized haploid cells – spermatozoa in males and oocytes in females – that carry half the genetic material required to form a new organism.
Key facts:
- Oocyte: Largest cell in the human body, arrested in metaphase II until fertilization.
- Sperm: Highly motile cell, streamlined for delivering paternal DNA.
- Function: Fusion of these two gametes restores diploidy and creates the zygote.
- Unique Role: Gametes not only transmit genetic information but also carry epigenetic marks that influence early development.
We will go in detail gamete structure and it’s components , in upcoming days.
‘Understanding gamete biology is the first step in optimizing fertilization outcomes in ART’
Question to you :
From your perspective, which contributes more to IVF success – oocyte competence or sperm quality?”
