Exploring Future Strategies for Embryo Selection in IVF – Reproductive BioMedicine Online
Reproductive BioMedicine Online shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper by Santiago Munne et al. published in RBMO:
“In this extensive Review article, Santiago Munne, Jose A. Horcajadas Almansa, Michelle Louise Seth-Smith, Michelle Perugini, and Darren Griffin evaluate the efficacy of three promising alternative technologies for assessment of ploidy status in IVF embryos (PGT-A):
AI powered algorithmic selection software – can classify the chance of an embryo implanting with an average of 0.7 AUC (area under the curve), at up to 10 times the speed of manual scoring however it is still inferior to invasive PGT-A.
Non-invasive methods using cell-free DNA – are described as having improved significantly in recent years and with sequencing costs falling have the potential to reach 100% concordance with PGT-A.
Metabolomics – remains the least applied technique, but shows the potential to identify euploid embryos that metabolically are incapable of implanting, with minimal IVF protocol change.
The authors say that future non-invasive treatment regimes for embryo selection may involve a combination of two, or even all three, of these approaches.
