Impact of Vitrification and Blastocyst Transfer on Neonatal Weight – RBMO
Reproductive BioMedicine Online shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper by Ming Li et al. published in RBMO:
“This cohort study investigates whether transferring blastocyst-stage embryos combined with vitrification increases risks of adverse neonatal outcomes, specifically elevated birthweight and rates of large for gestational age (LGA) or macrosomia.
With a sizeable sample of 42,000 singleton live births, the study shows that both blastocyst-stage and vitrified-warmed (frozen) embryo transfers were individually associated with higher birthweight z-scores and increased risks of LGA and macrosomia. The highest risks were observed when both factors were combined (Vitri-blastocyst group).
While VBT has become the predominant strategy in clinical practice to improve live birth rates, these results highlight that FCT should not be prematurely discontinued without medical justification, and VBT should be individualized with careful consideration of infant safety. Although embryo transfer strategies are essential for optimizing pregnancy rates and cycle flexibility, balancing these benefits with potential perinatal risks and personalized care protocols is warranted.
