Laura Lindberg: Addressing Stigma in Emergency Contraception Awareness
Laura Lindberg, Professor at Rutgers School of Public Health, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper published in SSM – Qualitative Research in Health:
“Thrilled to share our new paper ‘You’re not necessarily pregnant’: Confusion about emergency contraception.’
Available here in SSM-Qualitative Methods
We found that many people are deeply confused about how EC works – including uncertainty about when pregnancy begins, whether EC can ‘end’ a pregnancy, and how to distinguish EC from medication abortion. These misunderstandings aren’t harmless; they shape stigma, influence policy debates, and can limit people’s ability to act quickly and confidently when they need care.
In a moment of increasing scrutiny of both abortion and contraception, clarity matters. So does listening to how people actually make sense of their reproductive experiences. Our findings highlight the urgent need for accurate sex education, person-centered counseling, and policy environments that protect access to the full range of reproductive health care.
Grateful for this collaboration with Alicia VandeVusse and Jennifer Mueller at Guttmacher Institute.”
