Alberto Sifuentes Giraldo: Key Insights on Antiphospholipid Syndrome From Recent Study
Alberto Sifuentes Giraldo, Rheumatologist at Nuestra Señora de Sonsoles Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper by Pedro Gaspar et al. published in Rheumatology:
“Sustained loss of antiphospholipid (aPL) positivity (≥2 negative tests ≥12 months apart) is associated with a substantial reduction in recurrent thrombosis risk, as demonstrated by a cohort study of 116 thrombotic aPL syndrome patients (1084 patient-years follow-up):
aPL negativization occurred in 32%. Primary aPL syndrome patients favored it; triple positivity hindered it.
39% of patients had recurrent thrombosis despite therapy; this was predicted by older age, arterial events, and persistent triple positivity.
In patients achieving sustained aPL negativization, recurrence risk dropped 88% afterward (adjusted HR 0.12, 95% CI 0.05–0.58; p=0.006).
These findings support the value of serial aPL monitoring in clinical management of thrombotic aPL syndrome.
