Clare Pin-Chia Huang, Associate Research Scientist, Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Flatiron Health, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper published in Birth Defects Research:
“Grateful to share a new milestone: My first-authored paper is officially published!
This work, now live in Birth Defects Research, explores the impact of pregestational diabetes types on pregnancy loss and congenital malformations.
- What we found: In this study of over 2 million pregnancies, several critical insights emerged regarding maternal pregestational DM
- Elevated MCM Risk: Both T1DM and T2DM were associated with an over 60% increased risk of major congenital malformations (MCMs) overall.
- Specific Malformations: We observed a 100% increased risk for cardiovascular and central nervous system malformations specifically.
- Pregnancy Loss: Mothers with T2DM faced a higher risk of spontaneous abortion (21.7%) compared to those with T1DM (17.5%) and those without DM (15.9%).
- Impact of Progression: Within the T2DM group, the risk of MCM was highest among those on insulin therapy, which we used as a proxy for disease progression.
I hope this paper provides valuable evidence for clinical counseling and fosters further research into tailored management strategies for pregnant women with pregestational diabetes.”
